Mitalamaria Islamic Primary School (Rainwater)
Project Location: Mpigi, Uganda
Of the 430 students here (baby class to 7th grade), 250 are boarders and live on site. Students have to walk 2km to a small open spring that is shared with many people. They tried to solve their own water problems by digging a well which failed and they have one 7,000 liter tank which gets depleted in one day. Only in rainy season do children have soap and water to wash their hands. A solution here would be a borehole and gravity fed tap system to reach appropriate places on site; it would also serve any prayer goers coming to the mosque. Bbaale is already very committed to bringing safe water to his children and we hope to make his water dreams come thru this year.
Proposed project: After surveying for a borehole was unsuccessful, 20,000 litres of rainwater harvest has been planned using plastic tanks. The community will contribute facial boards and has begun the process of water committee development. *All DLDT projects are monitored for at least 5 years and include WASH training, water committee development and ongoing community (non-financial) support.
“We are committed to good hygiene, education and support each student in being who they want to be; all are equal here and all are welcome” Bbaale Abbaasi, Founder (1995)
